Art begins long before the first pencil touches the page.
In Art Fundamentals, students learn to observe the world the way artists do. Through thoughtful discussion, hands-on exploration, and creative projects, they discover the principles that make great art while building confidence in their own creative voice.
A small-group studio class where students explore the world through the eyes of an artist — observing, questioning, experimenting, and sharing their work together.
Each class works through the Let's Do School Art Fundamentals curriculum book, with larger art-making projects built in between lessons to apply what's been learned.
We'll explore:

Line, shape, value, color, texture, composition, positive and negative space, and so much more!

All with a thread of art history along the way.

And we'll learn how to think, see, and speak like an artist.
This isn't a typical drawing or painting class. We're not teaching kids to copy a reference image or a technique. We're teaching them to see, question, and analyze — then create in their own style, at their own pace and skill level.
Who is it for?
Art Fundamentals is designed for curious students around the ages of 9 – 13 who enjoy asking questions, exploring ideas, and creating without the pressure of making "perfect" art.
This class is a wonderful fit for students who already love art, but it is equally welcoming to those who have felt frustrated, intimidated, or convinced they simply "aren't artistic."
Because the focus is on learning to observe and understand rather than producing perfect drawings, students are free to grow at their own pace while building genuine confidence.
Whether your child fills sketchbooks every week or has spent years avoiding art altogether, this class provides a supportive place to discover that artistic ability begins with learning to see, not with being talented.

Meet Your Teacher, Sarah.
I've been making art for as long as I can remember.
It just wasn't always the kind of art people wanted to hang on the refrigerator.
As a child, I wasn't focused on creating something beautiful. I was experimenting. I wanted to know what would happen if I used different materials, looked at something from another angle, or tried expressing an idea in a completely different way. Those early experiments taught me something that has shaped the way I teach today: art isn't about making perfect pictures. It's about learning to see.
That curiosity has followed me throughout my life.
I've spent decades exploring art through many different mediums, always believing that each one teaches us to see the world in a slightly different way.
Along the way I've worked with everything from clay and paper mache to digital painting, ceramics, laser design, and sculpture. Every new medium has challenged me to think differently, solve new problems, and continue growing as an artist.
That journey eventually led me into the professional comic book industry, where I worked as a digital colorist for acclaimed Wonder Woman artist José Delbo of DC Comics. It also opened the door to creative collaborations with remarkable people, including the late Val Kilmer.
Those experiences taught me that professional artists aren't successful because they were born with extraordinary talent. They become successful because they remain curious, keep experimenting, and never stop learning.
That's the same mindset I hope every student discovers in this class.
Art Fundamentals
Ongoing classes starting September 18, 2026.
Minimum: 2 Students

Current Class Opening: 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
More classes will be added as they fill up.
Limited spots in our small groups.
Tuition: $100 per month.
$50 One-Time Registration Fee
Terrell, Texas (near the Ben Gill Park and the Middle School)
Allergies: We do have two friendly cats who live indoors. The fat brown cat is mostly shy unless you have treats. The skinny black-and-white cat likes to attend school when it fits his schedule.
