Young Artists: The Language of Art

Art is a language.

Art is a language made of colors, shapes, lines, textures, and ideas. In this class, young artists explore the building blocks of art through stories, demonstrations, guided practice, and creative projects. Students learn the basics of artistic expression while discovering how artists see the world, make choices, and bring their own ideas to life.

A small-group class where students explore art by understanding how it is used, how it is made, and how they can use it to express themselves.

Each class follows a consistent rhythm designed to help young artists learn, practice, and create with confidence.

Every lesson includes:

Warm-up: We begin with a story, an illustrated example, or a look at a piece of artwork that connects to the day's idea.
Concept: Students learn a new building block of art through demonstrations and real examples.

Practice: Young artists practice the skill through a guided project, learning techniques step-by-step while making their own creative choices.

Sharing: Students share their artwork, talk about their choices, and celebrate each other's ideas.

Cleanup: We build good studio habits with a simple, consistent cleanup routine each week.

Who is it for?

This class is designed for young creators around the ages of 5 – 8 who are beginning to explore the world of art and want to understand how artists create.

This class is a great fit for children who love to draw and make things, as well as those who are just beginning and aren't sure where to start. No previous art experience is needed.

Whether your child already fills pages with drawings or is still discovering their creative voice, this class provides a supportive environment where they can learn skills, try new ideas, and begin to see themselves as artists.

Meet Your Teacher, Sarah.

I've been making art for as long as I can remember.

It just wasn't always the kind of art people wanted to hang on the refrigerator.

As a child, I wasn't focused on creating something beautiful. I was experimenting. I wanted to know what would happen if I used different materials, looked at something from another angle, or tried expressing an idea in a completely different way. Those early experiments taught me something that has shaped the way I teach today: art isn't about making perfect pictures. It's about learning to see.

That curiosity has followed me my whole life. I've spent decades working across mediums — clay, paper mache, digital painting, ceramics, laser design, sculpture — and every one of them taught me to see the world a little differently.

It also shaped how I ended up in the classroom. For several years, I taught in a special, grant-funded kindergarten program combining thematic lessons with rich academics. I taught my own 60 students a day. Sometimes we rotated classes so that I would teach a skill or concept to all of the Kindergarteners (all 150 of them!) in the school. It was the best!

I was always the teacher other teachers came to when they needed ideas. Some of my favorite projects were the big, collaborative ones - huge classroom murals that pulled in artwork from every single kindergartener and their teachers. Making sure every child's piece mattered, even in a group that size, taught me something I still carry into every class I teach: how to structure things so every student feels seen and appreciated.

That's the mindset behind this class. Talent isn't the starting point - curiosity is. I hope every student who walks through this door discovers the same thing I did all those years ago: that showing up curious and willing to try is what makes an artist, at any age.
